Jill Scott, Pennsylvania’s sensational R&B artist is bringing her signature sounds to the Benedum Center!
Jill Scott was born in Philadelphia in 1972 and is a singer, songwriter, model and actress. She began her career in show business by reading her own poetry at live poetry sessions and her work was eventually heard by Amir “Questlove” Thompson (drummer of hip hop/neo soul band The Roots). He invited her to collaborate with his band and she got to be the co-writer of their song ‘You Got Me’. The band won a Grammy Award for the song and Jill made her musical debut by singing it during a Roots live show. Her success led to more collaborations with renowned artists such as Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common, and she also expanded her repertoire by going on tour in a production of the Broadway musical Rent. She released her debut album (Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1) in 2000 and it’s been certified Gold in the UK, Canada, and double Platinum in the US. Both of her follow-up releases (Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3) achieved Gold status and she went on to win 3 Grammy Awards.
