The Color Purple, the sensational and multi award winning musical based on the eponymous novel is coming to the Benedum Center!
The musical features an impressive ensemble of artists who bring to the life the story of an African-American woman named Cecile and her life in the American South from the early to mid 20th century. It’s based on the eponymous 1982 novel by Alice Malsenior Walker; the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist. Its music and lyrics are composed by Stephen Bray (songwriter, drummer, and record producer), Brenda Russell (singer, songwriter, and keyboardist), and Allee Willis (songwriter, multimedia artist, and director). Its book is written by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, screenwriter, and novelist Marsha Norman. The musical’s original Broadway production premiered at the Broadway Theatre in December 2005 and ran for 910 performances (grossing over $103 million). It received many accolades including a Tony Award (for Best Actress in a Musical) and 2 Theatre World Awards. Its 2015 Broadway revival won 2 Tony Awards (for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical, 2 Drama Desk Awards (for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Outstanding Director of a Musical), a Drama League Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Grammy Award, and a Daytime Emmy Award.
